Doing Business in Argentina (2009 Edition)

Bravo & Bravo Losada started to practice in Argentina in 1957. The firm has been an independent member of IGAF Worldwide since 1990.

The Firm's position of leader in its professional field, which is recognized throughout the country, has been developed with ever broadening group of specialists in all aspects of accounting and business management, whose own business is to counsel and assist entrepreneurs and managers in decision making.

We provide investor and management services, administrative and technical assistance, and audit and compliance services.

Presentation of this updated Guide, Summary of Business Conditions in Argentina, is further proof of our vocation of service to the business community. In sympathy with the modernization of the country's economy, we can offer, in our consulting services, experienced assistance to those interested in the ongoing privatization's of utility services (e.g., gas, water, electricity, railways, postal service, telecommunications) and state banking, insurance, petroleum, steel, and other interests, as well as the expanding capital market, new labor legislation and the emerging Mercosur common market. We are convinced that the availability of these services is vital to those considering new or additional investments in Argentina.

My partners and I are here to expand and counsel on the information contained in this Guide and will be happy to answer any questions you might have. We are ready to assist in making your business successful in Argentina.

Eduardo Bravo Losada

Country Managing Partner

This Guide has been prepared for the assistance of those interested in doing business in Argentina. It was written to give the busy executive a quick overview of the investment climate, taxation, forms of business organization, and business and accounting practices in Argentina. It does not cover exhaustively the subjects it treats but is intended to answer some of the important, broad questions that may arise. When specific problems occur in practice, it will often be necessary to refer to the laws, regulations and decisions of the country and to obtain appropriate accounting and legal advice. Companies doing business in Argentina, or planning to do so, are advised to obtain current and detailed information from experienced professionals. The material contained in this Guide was assembled at December 17th, 2008, and, unless otherwise indicated, is based on information available at that time.

Best Locations for Business

Along with New York, London and Hong Kong, Buenos Aires (Argentina) was selected “Best City for Business” in a specialized report included in Fortune magazine. The report is based on a survey by Arthur Andersen of 1,433 executives worldwide, of which 54 percent are CEOs, and the remainder other senior management. Cost, environment, and other background analysis produced by Arthur Andersen's Business Location Services practice were also considered. The report ranks the overall business environment of 160 cities around the world, distributed in 4 regions: North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.

The main factors that made Buenos Aires stand out from other cities in Latin America were the pro-business attitudes prevailing in the city, the availability of skilled professionals, its government regulations, its entrepreneurial activity, telecommunications and other infrastructure, the overall quality of life for attracting talent, and the cost for doing business. The ranking for Latin America came as follows:

                1. Buenos Aires, Argentina

                2. San Juan, Puerto Rico

                3. México City, México

                4. Sao Paulo, Brazil

                5. Santiago, Chile
